Fall Hair Reset: Is It Time to Switch Up Your Routine?

September is here, and while you may be ready for cooler weather, sweaters, and everything fall, your hair routine may need a seasonal reset too. After months of sun, heat, humidity, swimming, protective styles, and summer travel, you may notice that your hair feels a little drier, needs more detangling, or simply isn't responding to your usual routine the way it once did.

Start With a Good Cleanse

Healthy hair care starts with a clean scalp. Product buildup, sweat, oils, and styling products can accumulate over time, so take a look at what you're using on wash day. Your shampoo should effectively cleanse your scalp without leaving your hair feeling excessively dry or stripped.

If you use a lot of gels, oils, edge controls, or other styling products, you may also benefit from occasionally incorporating a clarifying shampoo. Follow your cleanse with a moisturizing conditioner to restore softness and make detangling easier.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture

As the weather begins to change, pay attention to how well your hair is retaining moisture. A good leave-in conditioner can become one of the most important products in your routine because it adds another layer of hydration after wash day.

For natural hair, you can also revisit the LOC Method: Leave-In, Oil, Cream. Start with your leave-in to provide moisture, follow with an oil to help seal it in, and finish with a cream to add softness and help maintain that moisture. You don't necessarily need more products. You need products that work together and a routine you can consistently follow.

Don't Forget Your Scalp

We talk a lot about the hair we can see, but what's happening underneath matters too. Keep your scalp clean, pay attention to persistent itching, flaking or irritation, and avoid allowing heavy products to continuously build up on your scalp.

And remember, scalp care products aren't a replacement for medical care. If you're experiencing persistent irritation, unusual shedding, thinning, bald patches, sores, or other significant changes to your scalp or hair, consider making an appointment with a dermatologist rather than trying product after product.

Your Fall Routine Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is assuming healthy hair requires an entire cabinet full of products. A solid routine can be surprisingly simple: cleanse, condition, moisturize, protect, and stay consistent.

I've made finding those essentials even easier by putting together my Hair Care Essentials, featuring some of my recommended shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, treatments, and other products for maintaining your hair and scalp.

Ready for Your Fall Hair Reset?

Shop my Hair Care Essentials and find the products you need to create a simple routine you can actually stick with this season.

Because healthy hair doesn't start with buying everything. It starts with choosing the right things and using them consistently.
