Healthy Hair Starts Here: Get to Know Bee Stokes Styling and Our Approach to Hair & Scalp Wellness
Your hair deserves more than a good hairstyle. It deserves a healthy foundation.
Let's talk about something that often gets overlooked in our beauty routines: our scalp.
We spend so much time finding the perfect hairstyle, investing in quality hair products, and keeping up with the latest trends. But how often do we stop to think about the health of the scalp underneath it all?
Whether you're rocking braids, wearing wigs, maintaining your natural hair, or navigating hair loss, one thing remains the same: your scalp needs care, too! At Bee Stokes Styling, I believe that healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. That's why I've built my business around more than just creating beautiful hairstyles. My mission is to help women understand their hair, care for their scalps, and feel confident throughout every stage of their hair journey.
More Than a Hairstylist: The Story Behind Bee Stokes Styling
If you're new here, let me introduce myself!
I'm Bee, the owner of Bee Stokes Styling, a licensed Master Cosmetologist, certified Non-Surgical Medical Hair Loss Specialist, and beauty educator.
My passion for hair care goes far beyond the salon chair. I've personally experienced alopecia since the age of five, so I understand that hair loss isn't always just about losing hair. For many women, it's also about navigating changes in their confidence, identity, and daily routines. That experience has shaped the way I approach hair care and the women I serve.
When I founded Bee Stokes Styling in 2017, I wanted to create a business that offered women more than temporary styling solutions. I wanted to provide education, personalized hair loss solutions, and products that address the needs of the hair and scalp.Today, Bee Stokes Styling serves clients in Louisville, Kentucky, and women across the country through our custom wig services, scalp wellness products, and virtual education.
My goal is simple: I want you to understand your hair and scalp so you can make informed decisions about how to care for them.
Your Scalp Is Skin, So Why Aren't We Treating It That Way?
One of the biggest things I emphasize when educating clients is that your scalp is skin.
Think about your skincare routine for a moment. You probably have a cleanser, moisturizer, and maybe even a serum or treatment that addresses specific concerns. Now think about your scalp care routine. Are you giving your scalp that same attention? Your scalp has its own unique needs. Just like the skin on your face, it can experience dryness, irritation, excessive oiliness, and product buildup. I like to explain scalp health using a simple analogy.
Think of your hair as the leaves of a plant and your scalp as the soil.
You can spend all day spraying the leaves, but if the soil isn't receiving what it needs, you're missing an important part of caring for the plant. The same concept applies to your hair. A healthy scalp helps provide an environment that supports normal hair growth. While scalp care cannot prevent every form of hair loss or reverse medical conditions, it is an essential part of maintaining healthy hair. And no, applying more oil isn't always the answer!
Five Ways to Improve Your Hair and Scalp Care Routine
You don't need a cabinet full of expensive products to begin taking better care of your scalp. Sometimes, improving your routine starts with understanding what your scalp actually needs. Here are five tips I regularly share with my clients and community.
1. Stop Ignoring Your Scalp Between Wash Days
I know we love a good protective style, but wearing braids, wigs, or extensions doesn't mean we can forget about what's happening underneath. Sweat, dead skin cells, and styling products can accumulate on your scalp over time. Establish a cleansing routine that works for your hair, scalp, and lifestyle. If you're physically active or regularly use styling products, you may need to cleanse more frequently.
2. Understand the Difference Between Hydration and Oil
Let's clear up a common misconception.
Oil and hydration are not the same thing!
While certain oils can help reduce moisture loss, they don't necessarily provide the water-based hydration that a dry scalp needs. If your scalp constantly feels tight, dry, or itchy, applying layer after layer of oil may not address the underlying issue. Look for products containing ingredients such as aloe vera and hyaluronic acid that can help support hydration.
3. Make Sure Your Protective Style Is Actually Protective
I say this all the time: If your hair is dry, breaking, or experiencing excessive tension underneath your protective style, what are you really protecting? Protective styling should help you maintain your hair, not create additional problems. Avoid hairstyles that pull excessively on your edges, cause discomfort, or prevent you from properly caring for your scalp. And remember, you don't have to sacrifice scalp health to have a beautiful hairstyle.
4. Protect Your Hair While You Sleep
A simple nighttime routine can make a difference in how well you maintain your hairstyle.
Satin or silk bonnets, scarves, and pillowcases can help reduce friction that contributes to tangling and breakage. Whether you're wearing your natural hair or a custom wig, proper nighttime maintenance can help preserve your style and reduce unnecessary manipulation.
5. Pay Attention to What Your Scalp Is Telling You
Persistent itching, burning, tenderness, excessive flaking, or unusual shedding shouldn't automatically be dismissed as normal. Sometimes your scalp is telling you that something needs attention. If symptoms persist or you notice sudden or progressive hair loss, consult a dermatologist or qualified healthcare professional. The earlier you address potential concerns, the better equipped you are to make informed decisions about your hair and scalp care.
Meet R&R Root Relief: Because Your Scalp Needs R&R
One of the reasons I created R&R Root Relief was because I noticed how often scalp care gets overlooked in our regular hair routines. We have products for shine, definition, hold, and length retention, but what are we doing to care for the skin underneath our hair?
R&R Root Relief is a lightweight scalp tonic developed to support hydration, scalp comfort, and a refreshing scalp care experience. I intentionally chose ingredients that serve different purposes within the formula.
Aloe Vera Juice, Glycerin, and Marshmallow Root Extract help support hydration, moisture retention, and scalp conditioning. Lactobacillus Ferment provides additional skin-conditioning benefits, while Pumpkin Seed Oil and Tamanu Oil help condition the scalp.
The formula also includes Saw Palmetto Extract, a botanical ingredient being studied for its potential relationship with DHT-related pathways. And let's not forget one of my favorite parts: that refreshing sensation! Peppermint Oil and Menthyl Lactate create a cooling feeling during application, while Tea Tree and Lemongrass Oils contribute to the botanical formulation.
What I love most about R&R is how easily it fits into your routine. Whether you're wearing braids, locs, wigs, or your natural hair, you can apply R&R directly to your scalp as a leave-in treatment or use it before shampooing. Now, I'm not here to promise overnight hair growth or claim that one product can cure every scalp concern. That's not what R&R is about.
I created this product because I believe scalp wellness deserves just as much attention as hairstyling.
Healthy hair starts with a healthy foundation, and your scalp needs R&R!
Custom Wigs and Cranial Prostheses: Confidence Beyond Hair Loss
Hair loss looks different for everyone. For some women, it's gradual thinning. For others, it's a sudden change following childbirth, medical treatment, or the development of a hair loss condition. And while not everyone experiences hair loss the same way emotionally, I know firsthand that it can be challenging. That's why custom wigs and cranial prostheses have always been such an important part of Bee Stokes Styling. I believe women deserve hair solutions that work for their individual needs, preferences, and lifestyles.
Through our custom wig services, I help clients explore options based on their head measurements, desired hairstyles, and comfort needs. Whether you're looking for a natural-looking everyday unit, a glueless wig, or a cranial prosthesis to accommodate medical hair loss, the goal is to find a solution that works for you. I also believe that wearing a wig should be a choice, not something that makes you feel limited. You can embrace your natural hair, wear wigs, experiment with different looks, or do a combination of all three.
Your hair journey belongs to you.
For clients navigating medical hair loss, Bee Stokes Styling also offers guidance on cranial prosthesis options and applicable insurance documentation.
Why Hair Education Will Always Be Part of My Business
One thing about me: I'm going to educate you!
I don't believe in simply telling someone what product to purchase or what hairstyle to get without explaining why it may or may not be appropriate for their needs. Understanding your hair and scalp is one of the most valuable things you can do for your long-term hair care routine. That's why education remains a major focus of Bee Stokes Styling.
Through my online content, classes, and consultations, I discuss topics such as:
Understanding common causes of hair loss and when to seek professional help.
Caring for your scalp underneath protective styles.
Choosing and maintaining glueless wigs.
Understanding hair and scalp care ingredients.
Developing realistic, consistent hair care routines.
Recognizing common hair care myths and misconceptions.
My goal is to give you information that helps you feel more confident managing your hair at home. Because while I love a beautiful finished hairstyle, I love it even more when you understand how to maintain the health of your hair and scalp between appointments.

Let's Make Scalp Health a Priority
Before you go, I want you to ask yourself one question: When was the last time you gave your scalp the same attention you give your hair?
If you had to think about it for a while, this might be your sign to make a few changes to your routine. You don't have to completely overhaul everything overnight. Start by learning what your scalp needs, paying attention to changes, and choosing products and practices that support your goals. And remember, healthy hair isn't defined by length, texture, or how much hair you have. At Bee Stokes Styling, I want every woman to feel informed, supported, and confident in her hair journey.
Because healthy hair starts here!
